April (Diamond)

Diamond is the birthstone for those born in April and the anniversary stone for the 10th, 60th and 75th wedding anniversaries. Diamonds symbolize love, beauty, purity, and success.

Every diamond is unique – they come in many sizes, shapes, colors, and with a variety of internal and surface characteristics. It is the only gem made of a single element, carbon. They are formed deep in the earth under high temperature and pressure.

Diamond is the hardest substance found in nature and ranks a 10 on Mohs hardness scale. A diamond can only be scratched by another diamond, not by everyday wear. However, a diamond is not the toughest substance and can be chipped by a hard blow.

Diamonds are also very rare. Mine workers have to process about a ton of rock to recover less than a carat of rough diamond.
